MyCloud DL2100 fan full blast & won’t boot
Permalink

Western Digitals My Cloud DL2100 is a reliable NAS (Network Attached Storage) device designed for small businesses and advanced home users. However, some users experience a frustrating issue: the fan spins at full blast while the device refuses to boot. This problem can make your NAS inaccessible and raise concerns about hardware failure. Fortunately, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to identify and resolve the issue.

Why the Fan Runs at Full Speed

When the DL2100s fan runs at maximum speed and the system doesnt boot, it usually indicates that the device is failing to initialize. Common reasons include:

  • Corrupted system firmware or failed update.

  • Power supply issues causing unstable booting.

  • Faulty or incompatible drives installed in the bays.

  • Overheating or temperature sensor errors forcing the fan to max speed.

  • Motherboard or internal hardware fault preventing proper startup.

Step 1: Basic Power Cycle

  1. Power off the device and unplug the power cord.

  2. Disconnect all Ethernet and USB cables.

  3. Remove the hard drives and label them so they can be reinserted later in the correct order.

  4. Wait at least 5 minutes, then reconnect only the power cable.

  5. Power on the DL2100 without drives installed.

  • If the device boots to the dashboard or shows a recovery screen, the problem may be with the drives.

  • If it still doesnt boot, proceed to firmware recovery.

Step 2: Check Power Supply and Connections

Sometimes, a faulty or weak power adapter can cause the NAS to malfunction. Try using another compatible WD power adapter or test the current one with a multimeter. Ensure the outlet and surge protector are working properly.

Step 3: Firmware Recovery

The DL2100 can be restored by manually reloading the firmware:

  1. Download the latest firmware for the My Cloud DL2100 from WDs official website.

  2. Copy the firmware file to a USB drive formatted in FAT32.

  3. Insert the USB drive into the NAS.

  4. Power on the DL2100 while holding down the reset button (usually at the back).

  5. Wait for the system to detect the firmware and begin recovery.

If successful, the device will reboot and allow you to access the dashboard.

Step 4: Reinsert Hard Drives

After confirming the system boots without drives, power off the NAS and reinsert your hard drives in the original order. Then restart the device. If it fails again, one of the drives may be corrupted or failing. In such cases:

  • Test drives individually using WDs Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool.

  • Replace any failing drives.

  • Restore data from backup if necessary.

Step 5: Hardware Failure Possibility

If none of the above solutions work, the issue could be a motherboard, memory, or fan controller failure. In this case, contacting WD Support for repair or replacement options is the best step forward.

Conclusion

When your My Cloud DL2100 fan runs full blast and wont boot, it usually points to firmware corruption, faulty drives, or hardware issues. By performing a power cycle, testing without drives, attempting firmware recovery, and checking the power supply, you can often revive the device. If the problem persists, professional repair or WD support may be required.
